BMW 135i by Hartge

German based BMW Group tuning specialist Hartge first showed us off-the-shelf parts for the 1-Series coupe when it was first released, and then shortly followed with the aerodynamics kits. Now Hartge have developed an ECU upgrade for BMW's already potent 3.0-liter bitrubo engine in the 135i coupe releasing an additional 44hp.

The result is a total of 350hp at 5660 rpm and 480 Nm (lb-ft 354) at 2950 rpm. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) arrives in 4.8 seconds – a half second faster than its standard 5.3 seconds. Also, an unrestricted top speed allows 280 km/h (174mph).

Hartge states that a 135i fully equipped with the entire suite of components will cost in Germany € 48,162.14, excluding VAT.

CLK 63 AMG Black Widow by Vorsteiner

The Vorsteiner name is still somewhat fresh in our brains following the recent E92 M3 CSL package story, but the California based tuner wants us to remember it permanently. So they've quickly released another kit but this time for the Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series dubbed, “Black Widow”.

Striving to subtly enhance the already dangerous looks of the Black Series CLK, Vorsteiner have crafted functional front and rear spoilers which are constructed of lightweight dry carbon fiber. Vorsteiner states the spoilers improve down force & aerodynamics during high speed tests at the track over 321km/h (200mph).

The carbon fiber rear spoiler balances the fr

ont end out by extending the original factory rear lip spoiler design by approximately 50mm with a more aggr

essive wing profile. Both of these components are a direct bolt onto the factory body panels without any modifications required.

Lamborghini Estoque 4 door

Pictures and Video of the Lamborghini Estoque four-door.

The Estoque - the name refers to the sword matadors use to kill bulls, is the first four-door to roll out of Sant'Agata since the company built the abominable Portofino for the Frankfurt auto show in 1987. Whereas the Porotfino looked like a Chrysler with scissor doors, the Estoque looks like a Murcielago or Reventon with four doors.

It's all sharp angles and long lines, coming in at almost 17 feet long. Those 23-inch wheels are nearly 10 feet apart. Unlike the Gallardo and Murcielago, the all-wheel-drive Estoque carries its engine just behind the front axle. Lamborghini claims the car's weight distribution approaches 50-50, providing "unparalleled agility and handling precision."

    Video showcasing the Lamborghini Estoque

So what about that engine? Sant'Agata says "a range of drivelines is conceivable." Topping the list of possibilities is the 520-horsepower V10 from the Gallardo or a twin-turbo V8 derived from it. But then things get interesting, with Lamborghini saying, "a particularly economical, but nevertheless dynamic, variation would be a V8 with a hybrid module or an extremely high-performance TDI."

Both options not only make sense, they're entirely feasible. Lamborghini is owned by Audi, which is actively pursuing hybrid drivetrains in vehicles like the Q5 SUV and the A1 concept it's bringing to Paris. Audi also has loads of experience with diesels, dominating LeMans with the R10 racer and wowing the crowd in Detroit with the 500-horsepower R8 TDI.

Winkelmann says the Estoque is a running prototype and the company could sell 2,000 to 3,000 of them if it goes into production in 2010. That would double the number of cars Lamborghini sold last year and let it compete against the Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera. Which, by the way, may come with a hybrid drivetrain.Source URL: https://carneeew.blogspot.com/2008/10/

Illustrated Porsche Buyer's Guide (Illustrated Buyer's Guide)

Illustrated Porsche Buyer's Guide (Illustrated Buyer's Guide)

This classic guide has been completely revised and updated by Randy Leffingwell. This updated 4th edition is filled with Porsche models from 1948 through the new 1997 Boxster, including the 959, 968, the newest 911s, and several others, plus remaining third edition material on the 356, the early 911s, 914s, 928s, 924s and 944s. 4th ed.

This book provides good, general information about the Porsche line of cars from the first 356 up to the '97 Boxster. Information is generally more detailed about the earlier cars (pre '80) and then the author(s) seem to run out of steam, adding only brief paragraphs to describe modifications during the more recent years. This is perhaps understandable, as all Porsche cars are evolutionary, with small changes being made over the years.

The book will be useful if you are just starting to think about buying a used Porsche, and aren't even sure which model interests you. If you have already narrowed your search to a particular model, then there are other sources of information. For example, there is a great webpage of the evolution of the 911 which contains most of the information contained in this book on model changes. The Early 911 FAQ website also has a lot of detail on individual model year changes, plus some performance information and a great section on the possible trouble spots.

This book will not provide enough information for the final selection of a good used Porsche. It warns of the most obvious troublesome Porsches (ie. 2.7L 911s) but lacks the details for some other common problems that are smaller, but potentially very expensive if overlooked. Consider the book a good primer, but definitely look elsewhere for detailed pre-purchase advice.

Illustrated Buyer's Guide: Modern Sports & GT Cars Under 20k

Illustrated Buyer's Guide: Modern Sports & GT Cars Under 20k

If you're in the market for an affordable sports car, this is an invaluable guide. Read complete background information on popular sports and GT cars, including quotes from auto magazine tests, "for" and "against" comments, and a report card rating system for everything from performance and reliability to resale value. Showcased cars include the Mazda RX-7 and Miata; Toyota MR-2 and Supra; Pontiac Firebird; Ford Mustang; Honda CRX and Prelude; Alfa Romeo Spider; BMW 3-series, and more.

    Review:
I am constantly dabbling in the idea of getting myself a sporty car that I can have some fun with but like most of us, I don't happen to have a large disposable income to blow on the hot new Ferrari 575. That is why this book is most fabulous for even the most fund-deficient of car enthusiasts that just want to have a pedal stomping, gear shifting good time.

There is a large collection of moderately priced sports cars that have been rated for various attributes. Each car has a few pages dedicated to the pros, cons and specs of the car, along with pictures and some history behind the car. I felt that this book covered a very nice variety of domestic and imported sports cars and offered almost all the basic information anyone would want in narrowing down their search for a new toy. I still haven't gotten myself a car yet, but that doesn't stop me from dreaming.

Modern Chrysler Concept Cars: The Designs That Saved the Company (ColorTech)

Modern Chrysler Concept Cars: The Designs That Saved the Company (ColorTech)

This fabulous, behind-the-scenes book explores more than a decade of creative Chrysler concepts, forward-thinking technologies, and the cars and trucks that emerged from them - Viper, Neon, Intrepid, Cirrus, Dodge Ram, Eagle Vision, PT Cruiser, and a full line of minivans. DeLorezo explains how these cars revived Chryslers image with Wall Street and the media, explores how they boosted internal morale, and introduces the craftsman who build them. A final chapter looks ahead to concepts that may be waiting in the wings in light of the Daimler/Chrysler merger. ** International Automotive Media Awards Gold Medal Winner **

Modern Chrysler Concept Cars illustrates how concept car designs spurred another business recovery of Chrysler during the 1990s. The storyline is how Tom Gale's daring cab-forward and retro design concepts (again) rescued Chrysler from post-Iacocca business doldrums. The book gives a great birdseye view of the business value of pushing beyond current design boundaries through the voice of Chrysler design honcho,Tom Gale. On this basis alone it should probably be required reading for students of car design. Buy this book for its business lesson about the business power of design and for its great photos of handsome cars, not for revelations of the visual keys to car design.

Despite many high-quality photos (which alone make the book worth buying) there is little about visual design principles behind the success of Gale's cab-forward and retro designs. Most of the pictures are dramatic three-quarter perspectives that reveal little about the shapes and proportions underlying the designs. To understand a car's design you need to understand its basic proportions, shapes and primary lines. These are only revealed clearly in "elevations" - perpendicular-to-the-viewer side, front, rear and overhead views of a car. Such views are rarely shown anywhere and not in this book. These cars are handsome; I want to know why and these quarter-view photos don't show me, nor does the text. The text of this book is more about mechanical concepts, intended performance and design-management decisionmaking than about visual principles or insights into the designs pictured.

This story begins with the financial failure of Chrysler's daring Airflow design in the late 1930s. The Airflow failure induced a long period in which Chrysler marketed increasingly dull designs on the basis of solid engineering. By 1949-50, Chrysler's obsolete pre-WW II design concepts were trumped in the market by the 1949 Ford and Mercury, the first finned Cadillacs and other new design concepts. The book gives only one paragraph to Chrysler's rescue-by-daring-design in the 1950s when Chrysler designer Virgil Exner turned to Italian coachbuilder Ghia for a series of seminal concept cars.

Design themes in the Exner/Ghia show cars quickly found their way into production cars such as the original Chrysler 300, a winning combination of design and performance engineering, the Plymouth Valiant and the gunsight taillights of the Imperial, for example. Only a passing reference is made to the Ghia d'Elegance as a source of design themes in the Chrysler Chronos concept car of the 1990s, citing its radiator-shaped grill. Omitting the 1950s episode is odd given that the 1990s Tom Gale design and performance-based concepts reprise the Exner/Ghia1950s design/performance rescue of a slumping Chrysler. Perhaps the author omitted this era because first-hand design players of the 1950s were not available to interview now whereas Tom Gale and his colleagues were. Even so, Chrysler's 1950's rescue-by-design deserves a full section, not just a short paragraph. Those who do not know history are fated to repeat it. So buy this book to learn how strong design can rescue business, to enjoy dramatic photos of excellent car designs, but not to learn much about what makes these cars look so good.

Vorsteiner E92 BMW M3

Distinguished by a power to weight ratio improvement of 10%, the previous generation E46 CSL (Coupe, Sport, Lightweight) was slated as a purists' club-racer version of the standard M3 with many features intended to increase performance and reduce weight. Visually, it was differentiated by its' carbon fiber roof, front and rear bumper fascias with integrated carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFP) splitters, special 19-inch wheels and a decklid with integrated rear spoiler.

Unfortunately, BMW has decided to cancel plans for the E92 M3 CSL, however, that hasn't stopped California based tuner, Vorsteiner, from creating their own interpretation. With emphasis on the visual aspects, Vorsteiner has created a body kit which consists of a dry carbon fiber front add-on spoiler, rear diffuser with 3 integrated aero fins and a new replacement boot lid with a built in lip spoiler. Also, Vorsteiner has added a titanium performance exhaust system that weighs only 7.9 kg (17.3 lbs) versus the factory system that weighs 25.6 kg (56.3lbs). Vorsteiner has also developed a 5 spoke wheel design named V-302 series. This forged 3 piece aluminum wheel is available in 20x8.5J and 20x10J – front and rear respectively. For the interior, Vorsteiner offers a full carbon fiber interior trim kit to complement the carbon fiber exterior of the vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series by Kleemann

Did you know that Kleemann is a Danish tuning company? Did you know they have an office in the US of A, and that they export their products to over 40 other countries? Did you know that Kleemann felt that the Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series was not enough? Imagine that! What’s not enough exactly? A few things really. One of them is power. These days any old kitchen mechanic can wring out 507bhp out of a car, no big deal. Kleemann felt this number could be challenged, not too madly but enough to worry the tarmac about all that melting rubber.

In order to do this Kleemann provided the CLK with a kit consisting of a set of high flow exhaust manifolds with matching downpipes and 200-cell steel sport catalysts, and a remapped engine ECU. For their troubles they were rewarded with an extra 38bhp, taking the unit up to 545 ponies. Torque is 675Nm. Power goes to the 20” tyres fitted at the back, which measure 305/25 and 11” wide, while front axle has to do with 10” wide with 255/30 tyres. The standard gearbox was not messed with, so it remains, along with the awesome driveability of the CLK 63 AMG Black Series. By the way, this special kit is codenamed Kleemann 63-K2 and can be fitted into any of the 63 AMG cars on the road today. Can we get some performance figures please.Source URL: https://carneeew.blogspot.com/2008/10/
