Production Ready Holden VE Sportwagon Unveiled in Melbourne

Melbourne is often referred to as Australia’s mini Detroit. Australia’s two biggest car manufacturers Holden and Ford, consider the Melbourne area as their home with various production, design and test and development facilities dotted about the area. Toyota also has a large production facility there so it comes as no surprise that the Melbourne International Motor Show is considered to be the one.

Not to be outdone by Ford’s recently revealed FG Ford Falcon, Holden have used Melbourne International Motor Show to launch the wagon/estate version of their highly acclaimed Commodore sedan. Holden refer to the new body-style as the “Sportwagon”. The Sportwagon can be equipped with a range of engines including a 3.6L V6 and a 6.0L V8. Engine outputs range from a 180kW (240hp) to the mighty 6.0L V8 which offers 270kW (360hp) and can be equipped with a 4 speed, 5 speed or 6 speed automatic transmission depending on engine option. There is also a 6 speed manual option on the more performance orientated V8 model.

As is often the case with modern car designs, the wagon variant is arguably a more cohesive design than the sedan body-style. Holden will be hoping that they steal some of Fords thunder and also attract some of Ford’s customers away from the very popular Ford Territory SUV.

Holden HSV W427 Supercar

Holden is working on unleashing its might on Australian roads as it revealed the HSV W427 at the Melbourne Motor Show. The HSV – Holden Special Vehicles – will be the fastest standard road car to ever come out of Australia, and will probably be one of the quickest globally as well. Unconfirmed power figures put the W427 at over 370kW and 640Nm of torque. Such numbers are seen only in saloons like BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Many thanks to Corvette’s 7.0-litre LS7 power plant.

To better utilize the power, a limited slip diff will be used in conjunction with a new high-strength 6-speed manual shifter.

The car receives GM product’s Magnetic Ride suspension which helps adapt the car to current road conditions for optimum handling. A number of exterior enhancements such as carbon fiber rear spoiler, 20-inch wheels and a new front fascia.

What a tribute Australia’s original “muscle car” which turned 20 years old today.

    Press Release

The car to be known in its final development stages as the W427 is finished in the same Panorama Silver paint scheme as the original Group A SS VL Commodore, released at the Melbourne Motor Show of 1988, exactly 20 years ago.
HSV Managing Director, Scott Grant, said the W427 was a tribute to how far the company has come in just twenty years. To be able to produce a vehicle of these proportions is truly remarkable, Scott Grant said.
The W427 will be quite possibly the fastest road registrable Supercar ever produced in Australia and among the quickest anywhere around the world, he said. While power output figures are still to be confirmed, the W427 is likely to produce in excess of 370kW of power and 640NM of torque.

It will also be one of the safest cars HSV has ever put on the road, Scott Grant said. A new six piston front braking system will provide a 50% increase in pad area, while the W427 also receives a revised ESP calibration, six air bags, improved handling and new Magnetic Ride Control settings.
The W427 receives a bimodal active exhaust system to improve noise quality and back pressure management.

Styling and design highlights include an all new front fascia, a three piece carbon fibre rear spoiler, 20 inch machined faced alloy wheel, unique exhaust tips and red leather interior.
Scott Grant said HSV would be introducing a unique customer relations program to accompany the launch of the new vehicle. The W427 will only be produced in limited numbers and we want to reflect that exclusivity in how we connect with our Supercar customers, Scott Grant said. This program will see the LS7 engine being fitted at Clayton, along with the dry sump system and a range of other engineering features. We are looking at opportunities to allow owners to visit HSV and view the unique manufacturing process that goes into building this car.
The W427 will go into production in the middle of the year and will be available for sale in dealerships in the third quarter of 2008. Make no mistake, while the specifications of the car unveiled on the stand today at the Motorshow may change slightly between now and when production begins, this car is destined to make as big an impact as the original Walkinshaw twenty years ago.

Holden Coupe 60 Concept

Holden is celebrating their 60th year building cars in Australia and to mark this milestone the company has produced a new concept. Called the Coupe 60, the car is built off the Holden Commodore VE platform and features a pillarless design. Powered by a 6.0L V8 engine, the car makes use of a side-exiting chambered exhaust system with billet alloy tips.

Nearly 60mm shorter than the VE sedan, the coupe wears 21-inch wheels and has numerous racing enhancements such as full flat under body, rear underbody air diffuser and functional rear deck-lid spoiler with unique designed LED tail lamps. In the concept has carbon fiber bucket seats covered in leather and suede, a flat bottomed steering wheel, and a LCD instrument display. The rest of the interior is covered in a luxurious mix of black leather and suede which is contrasted by red leather and chrome.

Production seems feasible, but as Holden’s chairman Mark Reuss said “This is a vehicle I know our designers would dearly love to see go into production, but for the moment it has to remain a concept only.” We can only hope that will change in the near future.

    Press Release

Holden Fans Get 60th Anniversary Present

GM Holden today marked the diamond anniversary of its first all Australian car by unveiling a stunning two-door performance thoroughbred called Coupe 60.

Coupe 60 celebrates the six decades since GM Holden built the 48-215 at its Fishermans Bend plant in Port Melbourne, Victoria, and provides a glimpse of Holden’s future directions in design, engineering and emerging engine technologies.

Exemplifying sports luxury, Coupe 60 is a pillarless concept car that explores the limits of Holden’s current rear-wheel drive capabilities, combining racing looks and technology into a road going sportscar experience.

Its sophisticated appearance is delivered through simple and powerful design, highlighted by the pillarless construction and V8 supercar inspired cockpit layout and side-exiting chambered exhaust system with billet alloy tips.

Almost 60mm shorter than the VE sedan, and sitting on 21-inch centre-lock alloy wheels with unique design Kumho high performance semi-slick tyres, Coupe 60 captures all that’s exciting about the Holden DNA.

Other racing-derived enhancements include full flat under body, rear underbody air diffuser and functional rear deck-lid spoiler with unique designed LED tail lamps.

The interior also has several unique features. They include one piece carbon fiber bucket seats (featuring leather and suede pad design) and a sports-inspired flat bottomed steering wheel with integrated shift light display and LCD sports instrument cluster.

The high gloss carbon fiber carries through to doors and rear trim providing a contrast to the leather trimmed instrument panel and black suede trimmed pillars, headliners and parcel shelf.

Details and accents are picked out with a distinctive red high shine leather on the seats and dark gunmetal finish and satin chrome on the consoles and doors.

Front seats are adjustable fore and aft to allow easy access to the rear, with four-point race harness restraints for all seating positions.

Under the bonnet is just as forward looking, with a 6.0 litre V8 engine incorporating the latest technologies such as active fuel management and calibrated for E85 ethanol fuel.

Even the paint is a one-off. Called ‘Diamond Silver’ by Holden designers, it gives a liquid aluminium finish that almost slides off the bodywork.

GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mark Reuss said, “Coupe 60 is Holden's 60th anniversary gift to its fans worldwide.

“It highlights Holden’s heritage of rear wheel drive performance whilst looking ahead to the potential offered by new technologies and materials.

“This is a vehicle I know our designers would dearly love to see go into production, but for the moment it has to remain a concept only,” he said.

Project Designer Manager, Peter Hughes, said, “We were looking to mark the diamond anniversary with a car that captured the Holden DNA and took the current VE range to an exciting next step.

“Even in the early stages of VE development, we knew there was a sensational coupe waiting to get out and the 60 th anniversary has given us the chance to explore that.

“With Coupe 60 we think we have designed a car that has the potential to write another chapter in the book of Holden icons.”

Chevrolet Lumina SS Ute Launched in South Africa

    Holden SS V ute export

The Holden VE SS V Series ute was launched in its native Australia back in August, and since early 2008 it will be on sale in South Africa as the Chevrolet Lumina SS ute. The Chevy Lumina SS ute will be almost identical to its Australian brother in terms of specifications and features, meaning that the new 270 kW (362 hp) Gen IV 6.0 liter V8 will be powering the ute in South Africa too.

The Lumina SS ute fills a niche all on its own says Des Fenner, Marketing Manager for GM South Africa. “It is a vehicle that has a tremendous appeal amongst a group of buyers that work hard and play hard and enjoy an active lifestyle,” Fenner continued.

Down under, GM Holden Export Manager, Kristian Aquilina, said: “Exports are an essential part of our strategy and with the success of the VE range overseas we expect to export 50 per cent of the vehicles we make here in Australia in the near future.” Make of that what you will, but we are venturing a guess that the El Camino is in preparation for the US.

    Press Release

GM South Africa Welcomes New VE Ute

2008 will see GM Holden celebrate its 1000th ute export to South Africa with the announcement that General Motors South Africa is to take delivery of the new VE Ute.

This is the first export program for the all-new Ute, outside New Zealand, and enters GM Holden into its 5th year of ute exports to South Africa.

To be sold as a Chevrolet Lumina SS Ute, the VE derivative will be almost identical in terms of specification and features to the domestic version of the sporty SS V Series, and joins the popular Lumina SS Sedan already on sale.

The vehicle was launched recently in Sabie, South Africa, where Marketing Manager for General Motors South Africa, Des Fenner, said the all-new Lumina SS Ute occupied a special niche as it was the only vehicle of its kind in the South African market.

“It is a vehicle that has a tremendous appeal amongst a group of buyers that work hard and play hard and enjoy an active lifestyle,” Fenner said.

“This vehicle raises the bar thanks to the wealth of expertise at GM’s global rear wheel drive design and engineering centre in Australia. They have created a vehicle that successfully integrates sports car performance, ride and handling, together with a functional load carrying capability.”

GM Holden Export Manager, Kristian Aquilina, said that it was great to see this long standing relationship with GM South Africa continue, especially with such an exciting product.

“The VE range, including the Ute, has generated a great response from our global GM partners and there is certainly a market for this kind of vehicle,” Aquilina said.

“Exports are an essential part of our strategy and with the success of the VE range overseas we expect to export 50 per cent of the vehicles we make here in Australia in the near future.”

The Chevrolet Ute has established strong credentials in South Africa as a recreational sports car and the new VE Ute is set to impress as a practical workhorse that promises functionality and versatility with stunning styling and performance.

Holden EFIJY Concept

A wild 21st Century hot rod reincarnating Australia’s most famous car, the FJ Holden, was unveiled at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

EFIJY is a radical pillarless custom coupe boasting V8 Supercar power under the bonnet, Chevrolet Corvette underbody and state-of-the-art automotive technology throughout.

The ‘Soprano Purple’ paintwork highlights its curvaceous 5.2-metre body, reinterpreting the classic design cues of the iconic 1953 FJ Holden. It delivers retro, mumbo and gizmos in one glorious package.

Obviously not intended for production, EFIJY has been a passionate side project for some Holden Design team members otherwise dedicated to creating the all-new 2006 Commodore.

A long-term dream for Chief Designer Richard Ferlazzo, EFIJY brought together almost 20 suppliers to highlight the latest in mechanical, electronic and material products and ideas.

Automotive excess pounds through a 480-kilowatt, supercharged six-litre V8 engine and airadjustable shock absorbers through to a touch control LCD screen and fan-cooled LED headlamps.

GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Denny Mooney, today said the EFIJY project was a bold statement on the creative talent available within Holden’s design ranks.

Mr Mooney said the project was developed as a collaboration with suppliers which reduced impact on the company’s heavy work schedule and ensured the highest possible quality result for the showcar.

"EFIJY is all about fun, emotion and imagination. It shows what a bunch of clever and talented design people can do when they are let loose to create something really wild," Mr Mooney said.

"This year was a fantastic opportunity for us to create something which highlights our designers’ ability and versatility."

"EFIJY is sure to evoke different memories for everyone who sees it. People might focus on the FJ links, the glorious custom coupes of the 1930s or the great design flair of the 1950s."

    Design philosophies
Holden Chief Designer and EFIJY project leader Richard Ferlazzo, who sketched the first EFIJY designs in 1989 and is a long-time custom car fanatic, said the car existed purely for automotive entertainment.

"Invariably, people smile when they see it for the first time. EFIJY is our accolade to the talented designers who cut loose with some fantastically flamboyant styling in the post-war 1940s and 1950s," Ferlazzo said.

"Ask the question, ‘what would these people have created using all the skill sets and technology we have now’, and EFIJY might be the all-Australian answer to that question."

"EFIJY is also aimed at the legions of custom car and hot rod enthusiasts out there whose appetites aren’t generally met in the concept car arena."

"Most importantly, it sends the message that the same people who have sensible day jobs designing entirely practical cars have the passion and inspiration to create something as outrageous as EFIJY."

"We’re all car nuts together and the fact that EFIJY stands on our Sydney motorshow stand goes some way to legitimising this form of automotive design in the mainstream."

Two Iconic Holdens Take to the Track at Clipsal 500

The classic old and futuristic new will combine on track at this week’s Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, Australia.

This year marks GM Holden’s 60th anniversary of its first ever car, the 48-215, which was built at Fisherman’s Bend, Melbourne Australia. The 48 stands for the year the car was first produced and the 215 refers to its 6 cylinder engine’s capacity at 2.15 litres, however, the car was more commonly known as the FX Holden. This vehicle was later upgraded and was called the FJ, and it is this vehicle that the EFIJY concept car takes its inspiration from।

Although the curves may bear a slight resemblance to the original FX/FJ Holdens, the EFIJY concept couldn’t be more different under the skin. The EFIJY boasts a 6.0L Supercharged V8 engine, air adjustable shock absorbers and rather curious fan cooled LED headlights. The car is finished to a supremely high standard which is reflected in its trophy cabinet as the car has won many awards on a recent world tour.

Both vehicles will take to the track, weather permitting on Sunday the 24th of February for a display lap.

    Press Release

Two Iconic Holden’s Take to the Track at Clipsal 500

In a unique motoring event, two of Holden’s most distinctive cars will take to the track in Adelaide’s eastern parklands during this week’s Clipsal 500 event.
Holden’s Number 1 car, the first 48-215 will be joined by world renowned Holden concept car, the EFIJY, for a unique lap of the circuit on Sunday 24th February at 1.15pm.
The track time will herald an exciting year of celebrations for GM Holden, which is marking the 60th anniversary of Australia’s own car – the Holden 48-215. On 29th November 1948, the first Australian mass produced car was born at GM Holden’s vehicle assembly plant in Fishermans Bend, Victoria. Today, Holden’s best selling car, the Commodore is assembled in Elizabeth, South Australia and continues the company’s best selling success, having been Australia’s favourite car for the past 12 years.
GM Holden’s incoming Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Reuss, will be behind the wheel of the 48-215 on its unique lap around the Clipsal circuit while GM Holden Chief Designer, Richard Ferlazzo will pilot the EFIJY.
Richard Ferlazzo says: “This is the first time the EFIJY has been driven in public in Australia so it is a huge thrill for me and where better to give it a first drive than at one of the greatest street circuits in the world?
“The 48-215 holds a special place in the hearts of many Australians and created the passion for the Holden brand that we know today. To partner Holden’s most iconic car in its birthday year is the chance of a lifetime.”
“I encourage all Holden fans, young and old to join us trackside to witness this unique event.”
A contemporary reincarnation of the 1953 Holden FJ sedan, the EFIJY concept car has been winning accolades around the world and recently returned from an international tour which included an appearance at the Woodward Cruise in the United States and headlining the Dubai Motor Show. Its creation was a boyhood dream come true for Richard.
“When making the EFIJY dream a reality, one thing that was front of mind was that EFIJY would be a fully functioning vehicle rather than just a show pony. While its design gives the impression of movement, it’s when it’s on the road that EFIJY really comes to life.”
The Holden Number 1 car and EFIJY will be trucked directly to Clipsal on Sunday 24th February to drive the circuit (weather permitting) and will depart immediately after the historic lap to be displayed at the National Motor Museum, Birdwood until Easter.
To support the EFJIY display Richard Ferlazzo will speak at the National Motor Museum on Monday 25th February – for more information, contact the Museum on 08 8568 4000.
About the Holden Number 1 car
The Number 1 car was restored by GM Holden’s engineers for its 50th anniversary in 1998. The car was originally launched by Prime Minister Ben Chifley in November 1948 when he famously uttered the words “She’s a Beauty.”
With a 2.5 litre engine and three speed manual gearbox, over 120,000 of the 48-215 (commonly known as the FX) were sold during its lifetime. The 48-215 sedan had a launch price of $1466 and was later available as a business sedan and utility.
    About EFIJY
EFIJY is a radical custom coupe shape boasting V8 Supercar power under the bonnet, Chevrolet Corvette underbody and state-of-the-art automotive technology throughout. The ‘Soprano Purple’ paintwork highlights its curvaceous 5.2-metre body, reinterpreting the classic design cues of the iconic 1953 FJ Holden.
The technology matches the larger-than-life design cues with a 480-kilowatt, supercharged six-litre V8 engine, air-adjustable shock absorbers, touch control LCD screen and fan-cooled LED headlamps.
A long-term dream for Chief Designer Richard Ferlazzo, the EFIJY concept was developed as a collaboration with suppliers which reduced impact on the company’s heavy work schedule and ensured the highest possible quality result for the showcar.
    GM Holden in 2008
2008 is a diamond year for GM Holden which will be recognising a number of key anniversaries during the year. These include the 60th anniversary of Australia’s Own Car – the 48-215, the 50th anniversary of the founding of Holden Vehicle Operations, Elizabeth, 30 years of the Commodore nameplate, 40 years since the introduction of Monaro and the General Motors centennial.
