Suzuki Swift with 1.2-litre engine launched in India

Maruti Suzuki has launched a new Swift variant with a 1.2-litre petrol engine which complies to the stricter Bharat Stage IV standard. BS-IV, which is India’s equivalent to Euro 4, will come into force this April.
The new K-series engine, with a power output of 84 bhp and 113 Nm replaces the old 1.3-litre engine with 87 bhp and 111 Nm. Maruti Suzuki claims better refinement and fuel consumption of 17.9 km/l, 2 km/l better than the old 1.3. As a comparison, the M15A 1.5-litre Swift sold in Malaysia has 101 bhp and 133 Nm.

But many Swift buyers are turning to diesel. Maruti introduced the Swift with Fiat’s 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine (common rail turbo with 75 bhp and 190 Nm) back in 2007 and it has been selling well ever since. Despite increased competition, Maruti sold 10,900 Swifts in December 2009, the model’s highest monthly sales since its debut back in May 2005.

ope I have not got my hands on the Maruti Dzire[swift sedan].I am not amongst those lucky few.However the reviews of the Maruti Dzire are out and the one from thehindubusinessline is quite detailed


 
From the review what can be concluded is that though you will get the features of the SX4,the dzire will remain its baby brother.The dzire may after all not be a threat to the SX4.Rear legroom is just the same as the swift and only the angle of the seat has been adjusted.Maruti have not offered a beige trim and an upmarket kind of feel to the interiors mostly to avoid clashes with the SX4.NVH too is on the higher side.Maruti has tried its best to ensure a difference between the SX4 and the Dzire by making sure the SX4 feel more of an upmarket choice compared to the Dzire and I must say I did jump the gun and proclaim an early death for the SX4.However let me still see the car personally and then I will take a final call


 
Maruti have made rear visibility better which was one of the main complaints of the Swift hatch.The addition has not affected turning radius or ground clearance and extra weight is only 30 kg so the dzire should give more or less the same mileage as the swift hatchback and drive should also be exactly the same which is a good thing since the swift hatch is one fun to drive car


 








Beauty lies in the hand of the beholder,however the review suggests it may take some time for us to accept the looks of the Dzire.For the front Maruti has given a chrome grill which is not present in the Swift hatch.There is lavish use of chrome on the boot too and so also the instrument cluster which has a white backlight unlike the orange on the swift hatch.

 


 


The all important pricing issue,the cheapest variant LXi[petrol] should be priced at around Rs.4.5 lakhs while the top end ZDi[diesel] should be priced at around Rs.6.2 lakhs.Prices mentioned are ex-showroom New Delhi prices.Even though the Zdi does have all the bells and whistles it is not exactly cheap and I expect the Vdi[diesel] variant to be the most popular.However let me warn you there is going to be a huge waiting list for this car and you may have to wait for quite a long while before you could own one.

 


 
Oh and the answer to the mileage[FE] kya hai question?The most conservative figures suggest 14kmpl in city and 19 kmpl on highways[for the swift dzire diesel] and this is no record run I am talking about.These are figures you and I can achieve.

Looking at the prices Maruti does have a winner in its hands,now the question is only how fast can I get my car.

The Car will give i10 and i20 run for their money. From the Front the looks are European and it does look like pretty young girl on delhi Streets :D. The Curves are good and the Height of the car is also worth appreciating. The only thing that looks little awkward is the rear. They say its arrow design, however it looked like that some truck had bumped it hard. It does not looked very bad, but does not have a appeal either


 
Not very Impressed with the grey interiors as opposed to the classy looks of i10.The plastic used is in no way of High standards. Also, the Dash has a tachometer which came as a surprise to me as while driving you have to look into two different panels which could be distracting. Overall the height of the car is worth mentioning. youe can actually see the road very clearly. After the test drive my Hcity looked very low on riding height.
The Boot is spacious as compared to other hatchbacks and you can actually fold you rear seats to accomodate more stuff


 
The Front seats are quite comfortable and adjustable. The Legroom is ample as compared to Swift. A 5’9" footer can easily sit in front as well in rear. The only drawback is the Rear seats. First of all the seats are very much straight and on that they are not comfortable. So if you want a car for your family and usually go for long drives then look somewhere else as your family is surely going to complain.








I am a petrol car enthusiast. So how this diesel car faired. Well from outside the car does not produce much sound as compared to other diesel cars. However, during the initial gears 1st and 2nd the car does produce sound and its heard in the cabin clearly. However, I was amazed with the pickup, it so good and just fires up on 3rd and a slight press of Paddle. The Gear shifts were smooth with force feedback. The Gear is placed at such a excellenct position ust like i10 sportz and it feels so good to drive. The steering is little heavy on turns.




 
I liked a car and will surly recommend the diesel varient for people with heavy rate of Driving. I think all of the Muruti cars suffer from cabin space but this one does not but lacks the comfort of Driving

As for the comfort, the Swift is fitted with front and rear electric windows. Central door locking facility is available only for the VXi and ZXi variants. All the three trims come equipped with 3-spoke steering wheel





The high-end Swift comes fully loaded with added safety features and accessories including automatic climate control, driver seat height adjuster, 12V accessory socket in the luggage area, electromagnetic type tailgate opener, rear window wiper and de-mister, dual front airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), keyless entry and seatbelt pre-tensioners


 
The Swift suffers in the ride quality department – the Chevy U-VA and Hyundai Getz offer better comfort levels. The damping is quite acceptable on regular roads but slightly severe treatment makes the suspension start acting up, jostling the passengers around. Handling is the sportiest among hatchbacks but the experience would have been a lot better had the tyres been better and wider
